Explanation

While you can always download YouTube videos and insert them into PowerPoint but there is another easy way to embed YouTube videos in PowerPoint if you do not want to download YouTube video and want to insert video using its URL from YouTube.

You will need an add-in for PowerPoint which will add a new option of 'YouTube Video' under 'insert Tab'.

Download add-in based on MSOffice version at the bottom of the post and add add-in in PowerPoint using the following method. Its a YouTube Video Wizard (YTV) add-in for PowerPoint.

For PowerPoint 2003 and earlier versions
  • Extract the contents of the zip to a folder.
  • Launch PowerPoint.
  • Click on Tools > Add-ins to bring up the add-ins window.
  • Click on Add New and navigate to the folder where the contents of the zip file was extracted and select 'YouTubeVideo.ppa' and click OK.
  • You might be prompted with the macro virus warning. Enable the macros. When the Add-in is properly loaded, it will display a tick against the add-in name.
  • That's it. You have successfully loaded the add-in.
For PowerPoint 2007 or 2010
  • Extract the contents of the zip to a folder.
  • Launch PowerPoint.
  • Click on Office Button > PowerPoint Options.
  • In the PowerPoint Options dialog, select the Add-ins tab.
  • Select 'PowerPoint Add-ins' from the Manage drop down and click 'Go'
  • On the Add-ins dialog, click 'Add New' and navigate to the folder where the contents of the zip file was extracted and select 'YouTubeVideo2k7.ppa' and click on OK.
  • You might be prompted with the macro virus warning. Enable the macros. When the Add-in is properly loaded, it will display a tick against the add-in name.
  • That's it. You have successfully loaded the add-in.

Using Microsoft PowerPoint You can also double click 'YouTubeVideo2k7.ppa' directly which will bring up PowerPoint and the add-in will be loaded for you for that session to use.

Above solution works great, the only problem is that it streams live videos so an internet connection is required to playback the video during the slide show. If you plan to deliver a presentation without internet, take the following approach.

If you are interested in embedding YouTube videos in PowerPoint offline then you have to download and convert video from YouTube first and then embed into PowerPoint. First download the YouTube video locally in either WMV or AVI format because PowerPoint doesn't understand the default FLV or MP4 formats of YouTube. You can either use free online services to save any YouTube video as an AVI file. Simply use insert option in PowerPoint and then select 'Movie' tab to embed video from your computer into PowerPoint.

Actually, there are also other methods of embedding a Youtube video into PowerPoint, see the tutorial:

Put a Youtube Video into PowerPoint

You can embed a YouTube video into a powerpoint presentation. For example, your company may have videos on YouTube that you would like to show. If you're sure that you'll have a live Internet connection when you present, you can use this method.

  1. Display the YouTube movie at YouTube.com.
  2. From the URL text box, copy the URL to the clipboard.

YouTube in PowerPoint

  1. Choose View> Toolbars> Control Toolbox. (In PowerPoint 2007, go to Developer tab> Controls group. If you don't see the Developer tab, click the Office button> PowerPoint Options. In the Popular category, check the Show Developer Tab in the Ribbon check box.)
  2. Click the Hammer button (More Controls).
  3. Choose Shockwave Flash Object from the menu. (In PowerPoint 2007, click OK.)

YouTube in PowerPoint

  2. Paste the YouTube URL that you copied.
  3. In the URL, delete the text watch?.
  4. In the URL, replace the = (equal) sign with a / (forward slash). You'll end up with a URL that looks like http://www.youtube.com/v/0onkpWsGc4A.
  5. Set the Loop value to False unless you want the movie to repeat over and over.
  6. Set the Playing value to False to allow you to click when you want the movie to start, rather than automatically when you display the PowerPoint slide.
  7. Close the Properties window using its close box.
  8. Choose Slide Show view to see the movie. Click the Play button to start the movie.

Note: On repeated playing, the movie sometimes starts itself or plays at a quick speed. Just click the Pause button, drag the slider to the left, and click Play.

Back to School idea: Be impressed on others' mind by unique self-introduction

It's time to go back to school again. No matter you are a student or a teacher, you may want to leave a good and deep impression on others at the first day of the new school year, just as we know, the first impression is always the most important, so why not make a unique self-introduction? But how can you achieve a "unique self-introduction", maybe you still have no idea about it, but actually I have one: To Upload Your Self-Introduction PowerPoint Presentation to Youtube! Seems special, doesn't it? So why don't you follow the below steps to make yours?

Follow the below steps:

Step 1: Collect the things you may need:

A: Check whether there is a MS PowerPoint installed on your computer, if not, install one.

Click here to download a free 60-day trail.

B: Look for some related templates, so that you can make your self-introduction easier.

You can find some here.

C:Free download the PowerPoint to Video Converter.

Step 2: Make your self-introduction PowerPoint Presentation with the free templates.

Step 3: Convert your self-introduction slideshow to video formats:

1. Install the PowerPoint to Video Converter.

2. Click the "Add" button to import your Self-Introduction PowerPoint file. This may take a few seconds depending on the size of the file.

3. Specify the parameters of the video and audio settings. Click "Settings" and you will see the following interface:

Tips: Youtube only accepts the 4 following video formats: .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, .MPG.

4. Click "Customize" button to set the Timing, Music, Audio, Slide and Conversion options. After your click, the following window will pop up:

5. Click "Start" to begin conversion.

Step 4: Upload the output video to Youtube.

All has been done within such easy steps, then you can make your Self-Introduction just enter the Youtube website without worries about whether a MS PowerPoint was installed in the school computer or there is a different PowerPoint version puzzle. If your students or classmates still didn't catch what you said about yourself after your self-introduction, you can leave the video address to make them learn more.

Seems a good idea? Why not start now?
